Tbilisi celebrates sustainable energy development in Georgian cities

By Miriam Eisermann on 28 juillet 2015

Despite the heavy floods that occured two weeks before, capital city of Georgia Tbilisi adhered to its idea of organising the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) in the end of June.

Initiated by the European Commission, this week aims at spreading best practices, inspiring new ideas and building new alliances to meet the European energy and climate objectives.

The Municipality of Tbilisi - a still young member of Energy Cities - has organised the European Sustainable Energy Week since 2010. This year, out of the 670 events organized all over Europe, two of them were held in Tbilisi.

Ambitious commitments in the focus

With 13 Georgian cities and municipalities being engaged in the Covenant of Mayors, a particular focus of EUSEW was laid on the commitments and expected benefits.

The association Energy Efficiency Center of Georgia and the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia are Covenant of Mayors official supporters in Georgia while the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources are reaching out to the local authorities as Covenant coordinators.

The event highlighted the state of play of the Georgian cities and communities, the way they develop and implement their sustainable energy action plan as well as funding opportunities for their projects. Participants also shared renewable energy and energy efficiency demonstration projects and the obtained results.

Student’s Architectural Competition and Award Ceremony

On 30 June , Tbilisi City Council and Energy Efficiency Centre Georgia organised an exhibition and award ceremony of student‘s design projects. The fourth edition of this key event was to identify architectural designs taking into account principles of sustainable development. The same day an exhibition of Renewable Energy and Energy Saving Technologies took place in the city hall.
