A busy week for EU Energy and Climate policies

By Blandine Pidoux on 27 février 2015

This past week paved the way for the next 5 years of EU Energy and Climate policies. As you can read in this newsletter edition, the Commission released two “roadmaps” : one positioning Europe in the COP21 debate and another one giving shape to the European Energy Union. This latter has been called for by the former Prime Minister of Poland, now the European Council President Donald Tusk, in order to tackle the energy security challenge. Interestingly, we can read that the Commission is convinced that

  • the solution comes from a decarbonised economy ;
  • energy savings should be prioritised
  • a strategy to promote heat as such in the energy mix is necessary

For the first time, the Commission firmly supports local leaders committed through the Covenant of Mayors. During a high level round table on the strategic role of cities and the energy challenges on 25th of February in Brussels, Energy Cities members from Delft, Cork and Bristol debated with Commissioner Sefcovic and MEPs. Our Board of Directors will continue this conversation next week with further key-decision makers.

Even if the role of local authorities in the energy transition is high on the agenda, we still fall short in terms of concrete proposals endorsed by them. We have good prospects of making change happen !
