EU deal on Energy Union Governance enables local authorities to participate in designing national climate and energy futures

At 4 am this morning, the EU institutions reached an agreement on a key component of the Energy Union, the regulation on the Governance of the Energy Union. Through this regulation, the EU defines the political process for ensuring that the EU's mid- and long-term energy and climate objectives are met. Member States will have to draft 2030 national energy and climate plans and involve stakeholders, including local authorities, in the design and implementation of their plans.

EU taking big step forward toward energy democracy

Early this morning the European Parliament and the European Council reached an agreement on the Renewable Energy Directive: by 2030 the EU will have to increase renewables to 32% share of the energy supply and in order to reach this binding target, for the first time, an explicit role for citizens and communities is foreseen.

Cities: testbeds for energy innovation – Energy Atlas 2018

The Heinrich Böll Stiftung, the German Green Political Foundation, recently released its Energy Atlas 2018 - Facts and Figures about Renewables in Europe. The Atlas provides an overview of the current debates going on in the European Union countries, at the time when they are discussing their 2030 energy and climate strategies. It also reveals that a coordinated effort of EU member states towards the energy transition will be the more efficient and cost-effective option for all Europeans. French cities call for decentralisation of energy policy
